Methodology
How the Travel Ranking Was Calculated
The analysis covers regular-season travel for 138 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in 2025 and 2026.
Build Each Team's Travel Schedule
Road and neutral-site games were taken from CollegeFootballData. Ordinary road teams travel from their home stadium to the game venue, while both teams travel to a neutral site.
Match Home and Game Venues
Home stadiums, game venues, and geographic coordinates were matched with CollegeFootballData team and venue records.
Calculate Round-Trip Distance
Straight-line distance between stadium coordinates was calculated with the Haversine formula, then doubled to represent the outbound and return journey.
Measure Travel Conditions
A trip counts as long-haul when the destination is more than 1,000 miles from the team's home stadium. Road games no more than nine days apart count as back-to-back.
Rank Teams by Total Miles
Teams are ranked from highest to lowest by their total round-trip travel miles across all 2026 road and neutral-site games.
What the Mileage Does Not Show
The figures represent straight-line estimates. They do not reproduce exact flight paths, driving routes, connections, or a team's actual travel arrangements.
